very good. The Survivors was re-published later as Space Prison. This is a thrilling fast-moving science fiction book dealing with space colonists, space war, interesting enemy aliens, interesting good aliens, good & bad people, the outdoors, and human psychology. It has interesting characters and action. The science fiction part is simple (where are computers?), but it works, especially considering this book goes back to the 1960's. The scope is pleasingly large, covering the good guys over a couple centuries as they recover from disaster on their exile planet and plan a comeback to save the Earth. That planet, called agnarok, is a harsh place. Its predators are dangerous, but realistic, with one exception. Godwin does not provide enough prey animals for them to eat. His ecology is incomplete.

Still, do not let the missing animals or the improbable climax, complete with actual goose-stepping aliens(!), detract from enjoyment of this story. The plot works for both teenage and adult audiences.
